The ACT is a college-entrance achievement test. The ACT is more widely used in the Midwest and southeast United States than in the rest of the country. It is divided into four sections: English, Reading, Mathematics and Science Reasoning. In addition, there is now an optional writing test which is offered after all parts of the basic test have been completed. See your counselor for registration information. Be sure to include the Floyd Central school code, 152-503, on your SAT or ACT registration. Failure to do so will mean your scores will not be recorded on your transcript.
Students who enroll in AP (Advanced Placement) classes are required to pay for and take the AP test to receive credit. Each AP test will cost the student a total of $86.00. $8.00 will be paid at registration and the remaining balance will be paid in the spring prior to taking that test.
This exam, administered by the Armed Services, is a battery of tests used to determine or explore occupational aptitudes and interests. It is given to any junior or senior. The student may or may not be contemplating enlistment in the armed forces.
The State Board of Education has changed rules involving the Graduation Qualifying exam for students graduating 2011 and beyond. Students no longer will be required to pass the ISTEP+ math and English exams that have been required since 2000. All students who will be entering the ninth grade in 2008-2009 school year will be required to pass both Core 40 end-of-course assessment in the spring of their sophomore year. Students will take the Core 40 algebra assessment at the conclusion of the course. This may be as early as 7th grade or as late as a student's senior year. Students who have difficulty passing one or both exams will be given opportunities to retake the exam needed in the spring the following year.
The Core 40 end-of-course assessments (ECA) are part of Indiana's statewide testing program. The English 10 and Algebra I Core 40 exams test basic skills that are in alignment with the Indiana State Standards for their respective content area. A student receives a separate score in each subject area that reflects the student's knowledge of the basic skills and the student's ability to apply those skills to the tasks the student will face after high school.
Education, business, labor, and government leaders in Indiana have agreed on education expectations for Indiana high school students. Core 40 includes a series of academically challenging courses in English, math, science, and social studies. Subject content area exams are administered at FCHS in May to determine if students have mastered the content of the Core 40 curriculum. A student must also complete directed electives selected from world language, fine arts, computers, and technical career areas in order to complete the needed 42 high school credits to receive a diploma. State Core 40 exams are administered in Algebra I, Algebra II, Biology, and English 11.
Juniors have a special interest in the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship qualifying test. This test is similar to the SAT, but shorter. It is offered in October each year at Floyd Central High School. Entry into the National Merit Scholarship competition is based on junior PSAT scores. All sophomores and juniors who plan on going to college are highly encouraged to take the test. The SAT is a three hour and forty five minute test that measures developed verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities related to successful academic performance. There are three sections: math, critical reading and writing, which includes an essay. The SAT is used by colleges along with other factors such as high school grades, recommendations, community service and extra curricular activities in making admissions decisions. National exam opportunities are available to students presently in French, German, Latin and Spanish. These exams occur in the spring semester.
